EAS Bowling Initiative: A Stepping-Stone to Greatness
Using High-Resolution, Drone-Based Lidar Data, the Team Captured Coastline’s Rapid Transformation from Pre- to Post-Storm
The Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Bowling Initiative is a recreational bowling league that meets on a bimonthly basis (every other Friday) at the highly-economical UH Games Room, located in the basement of Student Center South. The league, spearheaded by Dr. Michael Antonelli, started as a post-faculty meeting get-together and has slowly grown in both size and reputation. The core team, currently known as the “Tuff Rollers,” consists of professors Jagos “Heisenberg” Radovic, Mike “Quiet Storm” Antonelli, Will “Slippery Slope” Struble, and Rob “One Throw” Stewart (pictured from left to right). The junior division includes graduate students Amberlee “Fancy Shoes” Enger, Zach “Sidewinder” Guess, Aritrika “Laser Sight” Saha, and Melania “Earth Shaker” Maqway (from left to right), all of whom are rising stars in their rookie year. Several other faculty members and students have made tentative guest appearances in our games, and we remind them that they need to come more often, lest their skills inevitably deteriorate.

Prospective graduate students and visiting seminar speakers alike [such as Dr. Justin Simon (NASA), Dr. Rajdeep Dasgupta (Rice), and Dr. Falko Judt (NCAR)] have been impressed by our skills and dedication. Let it be known that we challenge all interested participants to no-holds-barred bowling showdowns, with the hopes of fueling intradepartmental rivalries, increasing tension between groups, and eventually taking over the whole university. Currently, the geochemists are the undisputed champions with no contest from the Atmospheric, Geophysics, Environmental, and Geology groups that undoubtedly cower in their (street) shoes.
In this sophomore year, our goal is to set up a round-robin tournament between EAS bowling teams comprised of faculty, staff, students, and friends. Please email Dr. Antonelli (maantonelli@uh.edu) if you are interested in joining the rolling revolution. Sign up as an individual or as a team (≤ 5 people), for practice rounds and eventually a tournament where huge monetary prizes and awesome gear will be up for grabs. All are welcome!
