Department Launches Student Field Journal Initiative
Series Features In-Depth Journal Posts by EAS Students Covering Field Trips, Field Camps, and Other Research Activities
The Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences started a new series of web posts, called ‘Student Field Journals.’ The series arose from recognizing the amazing activities that EAS students are doing, including field work around the world, and a desire to build community within the department by sharing stories with each other.
An additional goal is to reach potential new students and show them the opportunities in EAS, maybe even recruiting a few.
The first post was made in the spring 2024 semester, written by Lucille Baker-Stahl, one of the TAs for Field Methods. The goal of this post was very specifically targeted at making sure future students know what the week camping in Big Bend is like and to help reduce the stress some students feel as they face their first big field excursion.
Two additional posts have been made this year. One is from undergraduate Shannon Dixon about her summer field camp experience in Svalbard. The most third is by recently defended Ph.D. student Ruby Patterson about her experience at a Mars Desert Research Station.
Future blogs are expected from the Winter Field Trip to New Mexico and from a student setting up seismic stations on the Gulf Coast. Hopefully soon, there will be students recruited from atmospheric sciences and from a summer internship as more and more aspects of the department are represented.
