Rocks, Minerals, and Community: A Glimpse into Geosociety’s Fall Activities
EAS Undergraduates Host a Semester of Fun and Learning
Looking to make new friends and level up your geoscience skills? Look no further than Geosociety at the University of Houston!
Our student organization is dedicated to building a strong community of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) students through engaging social and professional events, community volunteering, and opportunities to explore geoscience beyond the classroom.
Fall Semester Highlights
We kicked off the semester with a milestone: participating in the Cat’s Back event for the first time in our organization’s history! This campus-wide event allowed us to connect with prospective members, and our president, Abi Johnson, was even featured on the University’s official Instagram!
Shortly after Cat’s Back, we hosted our first General Body Meeting, where over 25 new members joined to hear our officers share exciting plans for the semester.
In September, we hosted several social events, starting with a game night where members bonded over board games and shared laughs. We also organized a group trip to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, where members explored the Geology exhibit and the Hall of Paleontology, geeking out over dinosaur fossils. Inspired by the museum’s Geology exhibit, we followed up with a creative activity during our September General Body Meeting — making rock labels for personal rock collections. Shoutout to the Geoscience Learning Center for providing quartz samples for members to keep!
October was packed with even more fun. We hosted a movie night featuring Dante’s Peak, complete with popcorn, and pulled out all the stops for our biggest event of the semester — the Halloween party. Members went trick-or-treating around the Science and Research 1 building, played Halloween games, and enjoyed pizza and desserts. The highlight? Everyone’s amazing costumes!
What’s Coming Up?
We’re gearing up for our annual Winter Trip to New Mexico and West Texas in January, held in conjunction with the EAS department. Interest in this trip is through the roof, and we’re excited for the adventure ahead!
