EAS Graduate Students Screen Documentary “Picture a Scientist” for NSM Community

A screening of the film, Picture a Scientist, and a corresponding panel discussion was held on March 2 to cultivate a safe environment for scientists of all career stages within NSM. The event allowed attendees to connect and discuss sensitive issues they face within the scientific community.

Panel & Audience Members
Panel and audience members pose at the end of the screening and discussion.

Picture a Scientist explores women’s experiences with gender harassment and discrimination throughout their careers as scientists. Faculty members Dr. Julia Wellner and Dr. Minako Righter and graduate student Devin McQuaig were fearless panel members for the group discussion. They shared personal accounts of gender-based hardship and offered wisdom and advice for how to affect change within our department and the broader scientific community.

Although the discussion was moderated, audience members (including undergraduates, graduate students, guest scientists, and tenured faculty!) asked questions and shared personal stories.

Our thanks to the NSM DEI Committee for sponsoring this event.
