Two UH Teams Presented to Industry Leaders at SEG Carbon Solutions Program
The Society of Exploration Geophysics Carbon Solutions Program is the first pilot program to promote and involve students from geology, geophysics, and engineering at several universities nationwide to study carbon capture, usage, and storage. Students develop real-world case assessment projects with the supervision and mentoring of professionals from different energy industry companies.
Two teams worked on projects at UH, which were a joint effort between members of UH’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Department of Petroleum Engineering. The students worked on these projects for six months where they fulfilled assigned roles as if working for an energy company.
Students presented updates and interacted with energy industry mentors on a weekly basis. The faculty advisor for both teams was Dr. John Castagna who developed these projects as part of the Carbon Sequestration and Advanced Carbon Sequestration classes during Fall 2022 and Spring 2023.
The final presentations were attended by more than 60 guests and showcased the students’ assessment of the storage potential of subsurface reservoirs in the North Sea and the northwestern shelf of Australia.
Both teams will also present at the Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Event to be held at UH the last week of April. They will deliver oral presentations on the results of their projects.
